Cuban Carnival Weekender

Calling drummers, percussionists, horn players, and singers!
From the founders of Orchestra Bombo, we bring you our Cuban Carnival Weekender; a residential weekend of workshops for drummers, percussionists, horn players and singers who will learn the rhythmically challenging traditional Cuban carnival melodies and drum parts from Havana style Conga de Comparsa and Mozambique and play as an ensemble.

Bombo in Conga Habanera

Drummers and Percussionists
During the weekend, drummers and percussionists will gain an in-depth understanding of the interlocking rhythms and breaks from both carnival styles. You will learn arrangements that include four separate conga parts, three bells, a bombo (bass drum), redoblante (snare drum) and play as an ensemble with horns and singers.

*Some experience playing either African or Afro-Latin polyrhythms is necessary.

Horn Players
Throughout the weekend, horn players will learn rhythmically challenging traditional Cuban carnival melodies and play as an ensemble alongside percussion and voices. You will also be taught basic percussion parts & learn how the melodies fit with clave.

*Some ensemble playing experience necessary. You will play from charts and memory. (Reading ability helpful but not essential).

Singers
Throughout the weekend, singers will learn rhythmically challenging traditional Cuban carnival melodies and play as an ensemble alongside percussion and horns. You will also be taught basic percussion parts and learn how the melodies fit with clave.

*Available to all levels. No previous experience needed.
