An unforgettable weekend of Brazilian rhythms and songs set in the beautiful Hertfordshire countryside.
Immerse yourself in the sounds from the streets and clubs of Brazils effervescent carnival scene.
Be inspired and challenged by the vast array of powerful folkloric rhythms from the Candomblé traditions.
Our venue is an Activity Centre in Wymondley Woods and adjacent is a 20-acre conservation area with mature woods, stream, pond and grassland.
Come and explore the vast array of music from Brazil with a focus on traditional, carnival and folk music. There are endless possibilities of songs and rhythms combined with fusions of different styles and instruments.
This is a great opportunity to discover some of these with two of the UK’s most respected teachers.
Tutors
Ravin ‘Raz’ Jayasuriya and J P Courtney
This short course will not only stand alone as a challenging and fun weekend but is also a great stepping stone towards other courses we run that focus on a specific music style(s).
When is it?
Thursday 11th to Sunday 14th August 2022. There’ll be workshop sessions on Thursday evening, all day Friday & Saturday and on Sunday morning & afternoon.
Content of study
Bateria, Candomble, Congas, Pandeiro, Pagode, Songs, Congas with Bateria, technique and arrangements.
Time will be spent working on individual instruments as well as group work and fusions of traditional & modern instruments.
Who can take part?
The workshops are designed for people who already play Brazilian percussion and/or have hand-drumming experience. Participants to be proficient on at least one instrument.
The classes will be run at a medium to fast pace and also provide challenges for the more advanced players.
The course is also ideal for musicians who want to acquire some percussion skills and learn about Brazilian music.
Indoor accommodation
The Centre has five dormitories, each sleeping 6-8 and furnished with bunk beds with storage facilities beneath. There are separate male & female showers/toilets.
On the Registration Form, if you tick ‘Other’ for gender please let us know if you are happy to stay in either a male or female dorm. If there is an empty dorm we will allocate that to you. Please note there are no gender neutral bathrooms but there are private shower cubicles located within the male and female toilets.
Camping
The Centre is situated within a 4-acre campsite. So there’s plenty of room for you to put up your tent or yurt. There are separate male & female showers/toilets for campers.
There is a campfire site and an arena space for games.
Instruments
Some instruments will be provided but if you can, please bring your own from the following list: conga, surdo, repinique, caixa, tamborim, pandeiro, ganza/chocalho, agogo, rebolo, tantan, timba…
You can specify which instruments you can bring on the registration form. Please bring your own sticks & straps and bring ear-plugs.
Food
Vegetarian food is provided for all meals during the weekend. If you have any special dietary requirements / allergies please let us know on the registration form.
Free time
During your free time you can go for a walk in the woods or enjoy some of the on site activities.
Your help during the weekend
To help keep things tidy and ensure this workshop runs smoothly, we kindly ask all participants to help with certain household duties.

TIMES
Arrive from 6 pm on Thursday to register and put up tent (if camping) and generally settle in. Depart on Sunday by 5 pm. A full schedule will be sent nearer the time.
